Mykonos, done properly.

The boat out to Delos, the Little Venice sunset, a catamaran to some quiet cove and the beach club that runs until dark. What each one is really like, what it costs, and where to book.

The shortlist

Seven you’ll be glad you booked.

First trip or fifth, these carry a Mykonos week. The catamaran that finds an empty cove, the boat that lands you among the Delos ruins by mid-morning, the sunset table in Little Venice you really should reserve.

Out on the water

Ancient ruins, then a swim.

The boat leaves the old port mid-morning for Delos, the sacred island where Apollo was born. An hour among marble lions and mosaic floors with a guide who knows them, then across to Rhenia for a swim straight off the deck and lunch before the ride home. One day covers the island’s oldest stones and its clearest water.

After the sun drops

The island only warms up at sunset.

The catamaran turns for home as the sky goes pink and the good part is just starting. Drinks at the water’s edge in Little Venice, tables spilling into the lanes of Chora, a boat that keeps the music running long after the beach clubs close. Go once with people who already know which door is worth the wait.

At the table

The best meals start in Ano Mera.

A farm lunch out in Ano Mera with cheese made that morning, olive oil pressed down the lane, a glass of wine that never left the island. If you book three food hours on Mykonos, make them these.

Only on Mykonos

The photo and the far side.

A photographer, a trailing gown and the Kato Mili windmills lined up behind you, or a jeep grinding up the dirt track to Fokos and the beaches with no road in. Two ways to come home with a Mykonos nobody else got.

On foot in Chora

Get lost in Chora on purpose.

The whitewashed maze was laid out to confuse pirates and it still works on everyone. Little Venice with the sea lapping the doorsteps, the Kato Mili windmills along the ridge, Panagia Paraportiani folded white upon white. A guide turns the wrong turns into the good ones and knows which shutters open at golden hour.

Around the island

Which corner of Mykonos?

Mykonos is small enough to see in pockets. Chora for the lanes and the sunset. Super Paradise for the day that runs long. Ano Mera for the quiet inland tables. Delos for the morning among the ruins.

Island-hopping

Other islands, one boat away.

The best trips off Mykonos are all afloat. Delos for the ruins, Rhenia for a swim nobody else has found, Tinos for the mountain villages the big ferries skip. Each one is a morning out and back before the evening starts.
